Larry and Kimberley Short have authored a third book together, to be released in 2022. This book will guide readers through The Last Act of closing the books one’s finances – where they discuss Wills to Trusts to Executors and everything in between.

The Last Act: Closing The Book On Your Finances

This book unlocks the mystery of how Wills, Estates and Trusts work.

It is an essential guide, translating jargon in the industry into plain English, providing simple explanations so that every person can understand the process of writing a Will and settling an Estate. Along the way lessons are delivered to assist the reader in saving costs.

The combined knowledge of Kimberley Short, with her Trust and Estate Planning Designation, merged with Larry Short’s Accounting Designation, and their combined 40 years of experience working with families, delivers wisdom in a conversational tone to help craft your Will and deal with uncomfortable situations that often arise.

This book will be useful for those looking to write a Will as well as Executors, Trustees, Protectors, & those wishing to hire these experts.

Some of the topics include selecting an Executor, when to use a Trust, and how to deal with family members who may be prone to hire lawyers when they are disappointed. It can be seen as your first step in taking the burden of your last steps to rest in peace on both sides of the lawn.

The Last Act is such a great resource that provides Canadians with the right information to plan their Estate and feel confident they’ve covered all the basics. This book is a very easy read and provides the knowledge on what to consider for every aspect of creating an Estate Plan. In many cases you don’t know what you don’t know, and The Last Act lays out all the steps that you need to consider for your estate. I recommend this book to everyone that asks me about Estate planning whether they’ve created their Will already and need to review it, or they’re creating one for the first time. Larry and Kimberley do a really great job of explaining the “why” behind the hard decision of who will be a guardian, executor, trustee or POA for your Will. Every Canadian should have a copy of this book as a starting point in Estate Planning.

I found the book to be an excellent read. Easy to read in three hours. Nice, short chapters to reference for specific estate planning issue, and in language that investment professionals and laymen can understand clearly.

In Short: Successful Investing During Turbulent Times

Many books try to preach investing methodology as in “here is what you should do.” That doesn’t work because everyone already knows that they should buy low and sell high but, because buying low can only be done during a time of great worry and selling high can only be done when the economy is booming and profits are easy to get, investors cannot actually make proper investment decisions.

This is similar to all the diet books out there. We all know we should eat less and exercise more, but how do you actually do that.

Real change arises when you change the way people think and that is what this book is attempting to do. The book is an attempt to retrain the reader’s brain to think differently about investing. Investors must understand that the stock market goes through a series of crisis broken occasionally by periods of calm. To make money you buy when the crisis is at its worse and sell during the periods of calm but most investors can only do that if they fight their feelings of fear during such a crisis.

Hopefully this book leads the reader to their own insight about their feelings around investing, coaching them on the historic behaviour of investors in the past and leading them to their own conclusions about how they should invest in the future.

Finally, investors should recognize that these turbulent times for investing will continue and the investor and their advisor have to take a different approach than they have in the past. We also see that investors do not understand how their advisor gets paid and this book pulls open the Kimono to explain how we are paid. As well, the investor and advisor should be aware of the upcoming changes in legislation governing the investment industry and the impact that will have on them.
